Growing up middle-class, I managed to travel throughout the U.S. And I mean, everywhere. But travel abroad has been limited to Belize, Toronto and Amsterdam.
ReplyDeleteThe difference between , say, Taos, New Mexico and Williamsburg, New York; is extreme enough. But Amsterdam was truly eye-opening. Cosmopolitan, young, leaning to eradicate much class distinction, for a non-warm weather tourist spot. Where people can let their hair down.
Everyone knows about the café’s that sell weed. But it was their red-light district which was amazing. Not seedy, as in San Francisco. But there were live sex shows in real theatre settings; featuring some of the most disturbing acts, I have ever witnessed. Couple this with the fact that parents brought teen boys and girls. Caught me completely off-guard.
They laugh at the fact that Americans actually pay to go to strip clubs. And for all this liberal outlook on sexuality; there crime rate, is a fraction of that of any comparably populated region within the US. Mental health versus religious dogma, has always been their focus.
As in every city I’ve lived, and having now lived in Cleveland for the past fourteen years, I have made it my mission to breathe sane sexuality into my fine arts.
Obviously, that makes for scant traditional art show invitations, at least locally. Ironic that the rare artist who is actually in more than one museum; finds showing even his more tame work, difficult. Ask anyone who doesn’t attend art shows, anywhere on earth to name a Cleveland artist. And I’d challenge any other name but my own to come in as an after-thought, second.
